Royal Lemkes is a supplier of plants and entrepreneurship and communication with a green heart. Sustainability is in the DNA of this family business. The motive is not profit maximization, but the ambition to make a difference with themes “Planet” and “People”. They have been storing heat in the soil since the 1980s. In 2011, the building had the largest solar panel roof in the Netherlands. Nearly 4000 panels were installed. However, they soon discovered that they had a surplus of energy. And what would it be like if employees could receive electricity from the roof of Lemkes at home?
In 2016 they started the project in collaboration with Greenparc Energy, Engie and Jules Energy. The starting point is to place everything in one location and to make optimum use of sustainable energy. The objective was also to bring prosumers into the position of energy supplier.
Looking for a dedicated storage partner Ateps was contacted and of course we wanted to participate in this project. Specific to this unique project was that this system needs to be used for 3 options. Own use, energy trading and FCR (frequency stabilization). Ateps designed a container in which these options could be combined.
In August 2017 we installed a 30-foot container with 2 systems. 2 x 400 kWh batteries and a 2 x 225kW converter capacity. 1 part can be used for own use and energy trading. The other part for FCR.
This combination of optimum sustainability also helps to raise awareness among both companies and consumers that energy storage is crucial for the transition to a sustainable world. Dutch companies both nationally and internationally can make a difference within the transition to a sustainable energy system.
